SUMMARY OF KEY POINTS
Money Talk Series Overview (0:00 – 1:22)
The episode begins with Shani Tené, the host, emphasizing the importance of tithing, even when financial circumstances are difficult. She challenges the common excuse of not tithing due to uncertainty about how the church uses the money, reminding listeners that once given, the money is in God’s hands. Shani shares her personal experience of how giving, even when she was broke, led to receiving blessings from God. The episode’s focus is on how to tithe even when money is tight, and Shani promises to share a resource and an actionable tip to help listeners improve their tithing practices.
Money Misconception (1:22 – 2:07)
Shani introduces the concept of tithing, explaining that it involves giving 10% of one’s income to a religious institution. She acknowledges that tithing is a controversial and often misunderstood topic, which can trigger strong reactions. She identifies four common roadblocks that people face when considering tithing: financial insecurity, lack of trust in how the money is used, differing interpretations of scripture, and a focus on material possessions. These challenges often make tithing seem daunting or even impossible for many people.
Mystery Guest (2:08 – 14:22)
Shani introduces the “Money Talk Series,” where listeners submit anonymous stories about their financial struggles, and she provides biblical-based solutions. The mystery guest for this episode is a 31-year-old single father named Malcolm, who works as a mechanic with an annual salary of $45,000. Despite his strong desire to give, Malcolm struggles with tithing due to the financial pressures of raising his children and maintaining his household on a tight budget. He views tithing as a luxury he can’t afford, especially when faced with the fear of not being able to provide for his family. Shani empathizes with Malcolm’s situation, sharing her belief that giving leads to blessings. She encourages listeners to put “#IFeelYou” in the comments if they relate to Malcolm’s story, promising to pray for them.
Bible Story (14:23 – 22:01)
Shani then transitions to a biblical story from Mark 12:41-44, known as “The Widow’s Offering,” to illustrate the importance of sacrificial giving. She paints a vivid picture of a charity event where wealthy people are donating large sums of money, while a poor widow contributes only two small coins—everything she had. Jesus praises the widow’s offering, explaining that her small contribution was greater than the larger amounts given by the rich because she gave out of her poverty. Shani emphasizes that the lesson from this story is not about the amount of money given, but the sacrifice and the heart behind the giving. She encourages listeners to focus on the quality of their giving rather than the quantity, reinforcing the idea that giving should be a meaningful act of devotion rather than just a financial transaction.
Tip #1 (22:02 – 26:00)
Shani introduces the first tip for those struggling with tithing: “Release Money as Your Master.” She explains that money can easily take God’s place in a person’s life, becoming their master. To determine if money has become their master, she advises listeners to reflect on questions such as whether they frequently worry about money, sacrifice important activities for the sake of earning money, or find it difficult to give away money. Shani reminds listeners that they cannot serve both God and money, referencing Luke 16:13. She stresses that giving is the first step to releasing money as a master, as it demonstrates trust in God and acknowledges that true security and satisfaction come from God, not from wealth.
Tip #2 (26:01 – 29:48)
The second tip is about “Renewing Your Mind” to understand that God owns everything. Shani cites Psalm 24:1 to emphasize that everything in the world belongs to God, and therefore, what we have is merely on loan from Him. She urges listeners to shift their mindset from thinking they “have to” give to understanding that they “get to” give, seeing it as a privilege rather than an obligation. Shani draws a parallel between God’s ultimate act of generosity—giving His only Son to save humanity—and the act of giving money, which is far less significant in comparison. She concludes by reinforcing that once money is given, it is in God’s hands, and what happens to it afterward is beyond the giver’s control.
FREE Tool to Boost Investing
The host introduces a partnership with Coachline, which offers a free “Get Started with Stocks” guide. This guide is designed to help listeners begin their investing journey by understanding stocks, determining an investing budget, and opening a brokerage account. The host highlights how investing wisely can increase one’s financial resources, enabling them to give more generously.
Tip #3: Start Small
The third tip encourages listeners to start small with their giving. The host acknowledges that giving 10% might be challenging for some, but it’s important to begin somewhere, even if it means giving up small luxuries like a Starbucks latte or Netflix subscription. The focus is on building the habit of giving consistently, no matter how small the amount.
Recap
The host recaps the episode by summarizing the key points: the importance of heart posture in giving, the need to release money as a master, renewing the mind towards generosity, and starting small in giving. These steps are presented as a practical roadmap for listeners to begin or enhance their journey toward financial stewardship.
BONUS Weekly Action
As a bonus action, the host challenges listeners to complete a “Transfer of Ownership” exercise. This involves listing all their possessions and symbolically transferring ownership to God, acknowledging that everything they have ultimately belongs to Him. This exercise is intended to help listeners internalize the concept of stewardship and reinforce the importance of giving.
Prayer
The episode concludes with a prayer for listeners, asking God to open their hearts to giving and transform them into cheerful givers. The prayer also includes a request for God’s blessings on those who give, aligning with the biblical principle that generosity leads to spiritual and material blessings.
Closing and Call to Action
Finally, the host invites listeners to enter into a relationship with God by repeating a short prayer, welcoming them into the kingdom of heaven. The episode closes with congratulations to those who made this decision and an encouragement to subscribe to the podcast for more content focused on achieving financial and spiritual abundance. The host also promotes additional resources available on their website, including an exclusive community for like-minded individuals focused on building eternal wealth.

TRANSCRIPT
(0:00) And we gotta stop using the excuse, I don’t want to give to the church because I don’t know what (0:05) they’re doing with my money. Once you give, it’s in God’s hands. I was so broke that I didn’t give.
(0:11) But surprisingly, it wasn’t until I gave, God actually gave me everything I have now. (0:17) So I really had to give in order to receive. You’re just giving back what God let you borrow.
(0:23) It’s not even yours. You don’t own it. You’re not the original owner.
It’s God’s money anyways. (0:28) So why are you being so stingy with it? What’s up? I’m your favorite money coach, (0:35) Shani Tené. Welcome to Eternal Wealth, where finance meets faith.
If you’re new here, (0:41) be sure to click that subscribe button because you’re not going to want to miss another show. (0:46) But in today’s episode, we’re talking all about how to tithe even when money is tight. (0:53) Now, this is a sticky topic, so y’all better tune in and promise not to cancel me, okay? (0:58) I think it’s important to discuss giving, so I’m going to do my best.
I’m not perfect, (1:03) but I do have a perspective on it. So leave all negativity at home. So make sure you guys (1:09) stick around to the end because I’ll also share one resource that will help you be able to give (1:15) more and one action that you can take this week to see immediate results with tithing.
(1:22) So if you don’t know, tithing is the practice of giving 10% of one’s income to a religious (1:28) institution like a church. So it’s the topic that often sparks discussion and debate and (1:34) is super controversial. And so I want to chat through four common roadblocks that people (1:40) encounter when considering tithing, okay? The first is typically financial insecurity.
(1:46) Many people struggle with making ends meet and the idea of giving away a portion of their income (1:52) can seem impossible and sometimes scary. Other times, I see it’s a lack of trust. (1:59) Some individuals question where their tithe is going, if the funds are being used wisely, (2:03) like what’s the church doing with my money type of deal? Sometimes it’s that.
(2:08) Other is just different interpretations of scripture. So while the Bible does mention (2:14) tithing, there are varying perspective on its application in modern times today, okay? (2:20) And so the last one is typically what I see is that there’s too much focus on material possessions. (2:26) So in a consumer-driven society, placing a high value on material wealth can overshadow (2:32) the importance of giving back.
So whatever the case may be, if you’ve ever felt any of these (2:38) things, then you’re in the right place because we have a solution and we’re going to chat through (2:42) all of these things that might be holding you back. So right now, speaking of talking, we are (2:47) in the money talk series where we’re normalizing talking about money. We don’t want to keep money (2:53) on the hush hush.
We don’t want to toss it under the rug. We want to start talking about it so we (2:58) can be about it and so we can ultimately make more money. So what’s happening is listeners are (3:04) submitting anonymous stories with questions and situations that they need help with and then on (3:11) this show, I’m going to provide real solutions to those problems and those solutions will be based (3:16) on biblical principles because you know we keep God up in everything that we do.
So if you have (3:22) a money problem or need help, you can submit an anonymous story meaning I won’t know who you are (3:27) and the listeners won’t know who you are. All you have to do is write it and go to the link in the (3:32) description and you can submit that story and so if your story gets selected, you may or may not be (3:37) our next mystery guest. But for today, our mystery guest is a male.
He’s 31 years old. He’s a single (3:48) father. He works as a mechanic.
His annual salary is around $45,000 a year. His expenses average (3:56) about $2,800 monthly and he lives in South Central United States. So his identity has been concealed (4:03) for privacy reasons, but we will call him Malcolm.
So here is what Malcolm has to say. (4:13) I used to look at tithing like a mathematical equation. 10% in, blessings out.
Simple, right? (4:19) But life isn’t a formula. It’s a roller coaster. I’m Malcolm, a single dad of three.
Every paycheck (4:25) is a tightrope walk. Groceries, rent, school fees, they all hang in the balance. I want to give, I (4:32) really do.
I see the church as a lifeline, a community that’s held me up countless times, (4:37) but when the lights flicker because the electric bill is late or the kids’ shoes have holes, (4:42) faith is tested. It’s not about greed. It’s fear, plain and simple.
Fear of the unknown, (4:49) of not being able to provide. I pray every night for guidance, for a miracle even, but until that (4:55) breakthrough comes, tithing feels like a luxury I can’t afford and it doesn’t help that I don’t (5:02) get anything in return. My life is still a mess.
How do I give if I don’t have anything to give? (5:09) Malcolm, thank you so much for sharing your story. I’ve been there before. I was so broke (5:14) that I didn’t give, but surprisingly, it wasn’t until I gave that God actually gave me everything (5:21) I have now.
So I really had to give in order to receive. And so if you can relate to anything (5:27) Malcolm said about tithing and giving, be sure to put a I feel you in the comments because I want (5:33) to make sure I pray for you guys so we can be delivered from those thoughts. So put a hashtag (5:37) I feel you and I will definitely add you to my prayer list.
And so the good news is if you’ve (5:42) ever felt like that, I got y’all. I’m excited to share three tips that will allow you to give even (5:49) on a low budget or just give in general if you’re already giving, give more. So before we get into (5:55) these three tips, let’s take a look at what God has to say about giving because we know he got (6:00) a lot.
So it’s story time. So in the story of the widow’s offering in Mark 12 verses 41 through 44, (6:09) it’s a perfect example for how we should be looking at giving. So I want you guys to picture (6:15) this.
So you’re hanging out at this big charity event and everyone’s just dropping serious cash (6:21) into the donation box. There are these rich people just throwing hundreds and hundreds and (6:26) even thousands of dollars into the bucket like it’s nothing. You’re kind of like, dang, I wish I (6:31) could do that, but I’m not rolling like that.
So then you see this old lady out of nowhere. She’s (6:37) super low key and she just walks up and she drops a tiny little coin in the bucket, like the smallest (6:45) amount possible. Most people would barely notice, but guess what Jesus does.
This is exactly what (6:52) happens in Mark chapter 12. Jesus observes wealthy people giving large amounts to the temple (6:58) treasury, but a poor little widow comes and only puts two small coins in there, which was all she (7:05) had left. So Jesus begins to praise her saying that she has given more than all of the other (7:12) people because she gave out of poverty.
So he calls everyone’s attention like y’all listen up (7:17) and he says that she gave more. Like what? Like if you’re one of the rich people, you’re confused (7:23) like, wait, what? How does that even work? I gave way more. But what Jesus is trying to teach us is (7:29) that it’s not about the amount of money.
It’s about the sacrifice. And so if you think about it, (7:35) those rich people threw in a whole bunch, but it was just like a drop in the bucket for them. (7:40) Not a big deal.
Didn’t hurt them. Didn’t hurt them. Wasn’t sacrificial.
It was just like, (7:45) I got the money, so here we go. But for that old lady, that tiny coin was everything she had. (7:51) So she gave it all.
She gave sacrificially. So the lesson here is about giving from the heart, (7:58) not just the wallet. So it’s about giving your all no matter how small it might seem.
It’s about (8:05) really prioritizing what truly matters. Like think about your time here, right? You could spend (8:11) hours scrolling through social media or you could just volunteer at a local shelter. It’s the same (8:17) idea.
It’s not about how much time you volunteered at the shelter, but it’s about the time that you (8:22) gave, how meaningful it was. Same concept with the money. So let’s talk about how we can be like (8:29) the widow and give sacrificially from the heart.
La corazon. La corazon. Okay.
So let’s go back to (8:38) Malcolm’s story real quick. So he mentioned that he doesn’t get anything in return when he gives. (8:45) And I just got to be honest, that’s flat out wrong because spiritually you’re going to get blessed (8:51) because you’re, it’s blessed to be a blessing.
So God will bless you for that. And then on the (8:56) financial side, a lot of people don’t realize that when you give like, y’all, that’s a tax write-off, (9:02) meaning the money that you give to the church, any money, all of that money can be deducted (9:07) from your taxes at the end of the year, which basically increases your tax refund if you’re (9:12) getting one. And if you’re not getting a refund, then it actually reduces the amount of taxes that (9:17) you will owe.
So it’s a win-win win. It’s a win-win. All we do is win.
Oh, don’t own the rights to that (9:23) song. See, I’m always busting out in song, but the point I’m trying to make is it’s a win-win (9:27) because you get to one, please God, win. And then two, you get to save money on your taxes, (9:32) win.
So let’s dive in to how you can give, even if you feel like you don’t have much to give. (9:38) And if you are already giving, how you can give more. So tip number one is going to be release (9:46) money as your master.
Money has the power to take God’s place in your life. It can become your master (9:53) sometimes. And you’re like, okay, well, how do I actually know if I’m a slave to money or if I’m (9:59) making money my master, what you’re going to want to do is ask yourself these questions.
First, do I (10:06) think and worry about money frequently? Do I give up doing what I should do or what I like to do (10:12) in order to make money? Do I spend a great deal of time caring for my possessions? Am I in debt? (10:18) And most importantly, ask yourself, is it hard for me to give away money? If you answer yes, (10:26) money is your master and you need to release money and let God be your master. God’s followers (10:32) have peace of mind and security both now and forever. In Luke 16 verse 13, it says, (10:41) no one can serve two masters.
Either you will hate one and love the other, or you will be devoted to (10:48) the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. So God makes it very clear in (10:57) his word.
So giving is going to be the first step to releasing money as your master. It shows that (11:06) you trust God with your finances. And so, because if you think about it, great fortune can be made (11:12) and lost overnight, but there’s no amount of money that can provide lasting satisfaction (11:21) and eternal life.
Okay? So nothing can beat that. Now let’s hop into tip number two, (11:27) renewing of your mind. So we have to begin to understand that God owns everything.
He owns (11:34) the computer you’re watching this on, the phone you’re watching this on, your mind, your body, (11:38) your soul, this world, everything. God owns everything. In Psalm 24 one, it says the earth (11:45) is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it.
So with this, we can really (11:53) get to understand that you’re just giving back what God lets you borrow. It’s not even yours. (11:59) You don’t own it.
You’re not the original owner. It’s God’s money anyways. So why are you being so (12:04) stingy with it? And more importantly, you don’t have to give.
You get to give. There’s a difference (12:12) between have and get. You also don’t have to go to heaven.
You get to go to heaven. So what do you (12:21) want? Do you want to have, or do you want to get? We have to make that decision. And also if we get (12:27) real deep, God didn’t have to give his one and only son to save you, but he did.
And so scripture (12:34) makes it very clear that the gospel is rooted in generosity. In John 3, 16, it says, (12:41) for God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not (12:48) perish, but have eternal life. Y’all, this is the clearest display of this extravagant generosity (12:56) in Jesus’ death on the cross.
And so in this, we see the utmost of God’s heart for generosity. (13:04) Literally, imagine giving your son or your daughter or someone that you love up to save (13:09) someone else. That’s the ultimate act of sacrifice and generosity.
So I’m saying y’all, if God can (13:15) give his one and only son, you can give some money that’s not even yours to begin with. And we got (13:21) to stop using the excuse, I don’t want to give to the church because I don’t know what they’re (13:26) doing with my money. Once you give, it’s in God’s hands.
You ain’t got nothing to do with what (13:32) happens after it. You got to leave it in God’s hands. So once it leaves your bank account, (13:38) you have to release that mindset and relinquish control to God.
All God told us to do was give. (13:45) He didn’t say analyze the receiver and give based on what you find out. He just said give.
So be (13:52) obedient, give, and let God handle the rest. And so I want to give you some books that will help (13:58) you be able to renew your mind and grow in generosity. So if you click the link in the (14:04) description, I’ll have all these books linked in one place so you can check them out and purchase (14:09) them so you don’t have to go looking for them all separately.
So the first is going to be Purpose (14:14) Driven Life by Rick Warren. Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey. Kingdom Stewardship by Tony Evans.
(14:22) Most importantly, the Bible. Okay, we have to open up and read our Bible. We can’t let it have there (14:28) being dusty crusty.
Open up your Bible. And if you’re like, okay, where do I start? Let’s start (14:33) in Matthew. It’s a great place to start.
There’s lots of scripture around money and how we should (14:38) use it and so how we should give and all those good things. Okay, so check out the Bible because (14:45) the Bible is our blueprint. Okay, so again, head to the link in the description and you can get all (14:50) the information to purchase all those books.
I’ll even link my favorite Bible that I use. It’s (14:55) amazing. Okay, so before we get into the third tip, let’s check out something from one of our (15:02) partners that’s actually going to help you grow your money so you’re able to give more.

It’s literally a game changer. It’s what’s allowed me (16:08) to increase my income so I could pay my debt and give more. So we’re just going to jump right back (16:14) in to tip number three to tithing is basically to start small.
So y’all let’s let’s pause for the (16:23) cause. Y’all better not come for me. But don’t be intimidated by Christians who say you have to give (16:30) 10%.
I think that’s great. And that’s awesome. But I am a firm believer that God cares more about (16:37) the posture of your heart than the percentage that you give.
So just like the widow, she didn’t (16:43) necessarily give 10%. But she gave what she could. And it was a sacrifice.
And God saw that as better (16:51) than the person who gave over 10%. Because at the end of the day, you could give 10% out of (16:58) obligation or out of wealth like the wealthy people did in that widow story, which it loses (17:04) its value in the eyes of God. Your heart has to be in it.
That’s what’s most important. The Bible (17:10) says he loves a cheerful giver. He ain’t say a reluctant giver, a force giver, a grudgingly giver, (17:18) an ungrateful giver, but a cheerful giver.
The value of the gift should be determined by not the (17:25) amount, but by the spirit in which it was given. Now before y’all come for me, don’t get me wrong. (17:32) The goal is to give 10% and to build up to that.
But all I’m saying is that if you’re saying you (17:38) don’t have enough money to start there, we have to start somewhere. And that somewhere might not be (17:44) 10%. But yes, we do want to work our way to 10%.
So even though it might be small right now, that’s (17:50) because God will bless you so you can ultimately get to that 10%. Now I know somebody gonna chop (17:55) this all up and mix and screw this and make it seem like I’m not about that. But yes, you guys, (18:00) I do believe we should be giving 10%, but we should start somewhere and it should be from our (18:04) heart.
Okay, what is the easiest way to start giving? The easiest way to give is to basically (18:10) give up one thing and use that money to give instead. So maybe it might be for going a Starbucks (18:18) latte this week or in giving that money. Maybe it’s canceling Netflix for a while and giving (18:24) that money.
Maybe it’s doing your own hair this month and giving that money. Whatever it is, (18:29) you give up something and you give whatever it is that you’re giving up the money that you would (18:34) have used to buy that. So we all have something we can give up.
You just need to decide what it is (18:39) and commit to giving regularly. So you can switch it up monthly. Like this month, you can do (18:44) Starbucks.
Next month, you can do your hair and so forth. And so just get creative. You have the (18:49) means to give if you really want to.
All you got to do is give up to give. Give up to give. I love (18:56) that.
Give up something to give. Okay? So remember, if God can’t trust you with a little, why on earth (19:05) would he give you more? So you really, in this case, have to give to receive. Okay? So this is (19:12) exactly what I did to get in the habit of tithing consistently when I felt like I didn’t have enough (19:19) money to tithe.
And so we basically talked about a lot. So let’s run it back and let’s do a quick (19:25) recap. So we started with Malcolm, our mystery guest, who feels he doesn’t have enough money to (19:32) give.
We tithed it into the widow’s offering in Mark chapter 12, verses 41 through 44, which teaches (19:39) us that it’s not about the amount you give. It’s about your heart posture. Then we connected it all (19:46) together with three tips to help you give sacrificially.
Tip one, release money as your (19:52) master. God is your master, not money. Tip two, renew your mind.
You have to get into the habit (19:58) of you do have enough to give. Okay? We have to renew our mind. And I provided some books to help (20:04) start that process.
And then tip number three, start small. It’s okay if you’re not able to start (20:10) with a 10%. Yes, we want to get to there, but you got to just start small.
Give up something that you (20:15) would normally buy and use that money to give. That’s it, you guys. Those three steps are going (20:19) to help you really start to be able to give.
Okay? And so for those who stuck around to the end, (20:24) I’m so glad that you’re still with us. Go ahead and give this episode a like and rate it a five. (20:29) And as promised for staying to the end, your action for the week is to transfer ownership (20:37) of your money and possessions.
So we want to transfer your ownership to God. And so where I (20:44) got this from, I attended a biblical finances class with Passion City Church. So shout out to (20:50) Passion City Church.
And they had this really cool exercise where we had to write down everything (20:55) that we own, all our possessions, like your house, your car, your computer, everything that (20:59) you own, and then transfer ownership to God. And so we’re going to call this our transfer (21:05) of ownership contract. So I want you guys to download your transfer of ownership contract (21:10) right now by going to the link in the description.
It’s going to give you a space to write down all (21:15) your possessions, and then a plot where you’re going to sign and say, I’m now giving all of (21:20) this over to God. I’m transferring ownership for me to God, because at the end of the day, (21:25) we talked about it, God owns everything. And so once you start to renew your mind and, and, (21:30) and believe that and give him all your possessions, he’ll start to do works in your life.
(21:34) Okay. So let me know that you’re committed to completed this transfer of ownership, because (21:39) y’all you think is silly, but it will make all the difference. Okay, so just do it.
Trust me on this. (21:45) So if you’re committed to doing this, type in the comments, God owns everything. Okay, again, (21:51) God owns everything.
If you’re going to do that transfer of ownership, type that in the comments, (21:55) God owns everything. And so I definitely would love to pray for you guys before we close, (22:01) specifically around giving because I know it’s a really tough thing for people to do. So (22:05) let’s let’s pray on on giving.
Okay, so dear Heavenly Father, thank you. Thank you so much. (22:12) We just praise you.
We honor you. We give you all the glory. We just thank you for the life that (22:17) we have.
I thank you for these listeners. I thank you for just just giving them the time to tune in (22:22) today. But I really want to come to you in great prayer around giving Lord, I pray that you open (22:29) up the hearts of every listener to just want to be able to give Lord change their hearts desires.
(22:35) So given be giving become something of second nature, something that they don’t even have to (22:40) think about. Please allow them to give renew their mindset, transform them, change them so they can (22:48) be get become cheerful givers Lord. We pray that when they do give that they receive your blessing (22:55) Lord that they don’t just give and feel like they’re not getting anything back in return.
(22:59) Although we know that we do not give to receive I we do pray that when we do give you are giving (23:05) us something in return Lord because we know that you are a God who keeps his promises and by us (23:11) being faithful stewards of our money and giving that you will bless us in return. So although (23:16) we’re not banking on that we are praying for that Lord and we just pray that you soften our hearts (23:21) to giving Lord that it does not become this tough subject that no one wants to talk about but it (23:26) becomes a natural part of our everyday lives and that we’re just able to bless other people Lord (23:31) we pray that our giving changes people’s lives advances the kingdom and ultimately saves people’s (23:37) lives Lord. We pray that our giving becomes a blessing and that we are essentially blessed to (23:42) be a blessing.
So again Lord help us to give release those shackles of giving begrudgingly (23:48) giving selfishly help us to give with a cheerful heart Lord. We pray all of these things in your (23:54) name amen amen amen. And so I never want to end an episode without giving you the opportunity to (24:03) enter into a relationship with God.
So it doesn’t matter if you’ve never given a day in your life (24:09) it doesn’t matter if you give all the time it doesn’t matter what you’re doing with your money (24:13) maybe you just want to have a better relationship with God you need healing maybe you need physical (24:18) healing maybe you need mental healing you need emotional healing God can heal all those things (24:23) because when you give your life to Christ you are born again.
